All of the used shears that are listed on this page are hydraulically driven. For a complete listing of all the pre-owned metal shearing machines that Kempler Industries has to offer, visit the Power Metal Shear (All) page. That page includes used mechanical shears, used pneumatic shears as well as used hydraulic shears.

Cutting sheet metal or steel plate can be accomplished on a mechanical or a hydraulic shear. Hydraulic shears are far less expensive to build than mechanical shears, and therefore are less expensive to purchase when buying a new machine. This is one of the reasons that hydraulic shears have become so popular in today’s marketplace.

When considering the purchase of a power metal shear in the used marketplace, many fabricators assume they require a hydraulic shear. In reality, there is little difference in the end result of a hydraulic shear and a mechanical shear. One of the biggest differences between the two is that mechanical shears are in general significantly faster than hydraulic shears. Historically, older mechanical shears were typically overbuilt. They were very rugged and extremely durable especially when compared to the lighter built modern hydraulic shears of today.

Some of the desirable attributes of hydraulic shears include having far fewer moving parts than their mechanical counterparts. Hydraulic shears have accessible hydraulic systems that are easy to maintain. Maintenance on a mechanical shear can be more difficult and sometimes more costly. Adjustable stroke length and easily adjustable rake angle are often attractive features on hydraulic shears. Variable rake, adjustable from zero to the maximum rake angle, allows for cutting shorter lengths and less distortion in material that is lighter than the machine’s capacity.
