What are the different types of used hydraulic press brakes?

  • Conventional Used Hydraulic Press Brakes: The most common hydraulic press brakes conventionally have two cylinders mounted on the side housings in the front of the machine. The cylinders are fastened to the ram, allowing the male and female die to mate under pressure, forming predetermined bends.
  • Used Hydra-Mechanical Press Brakes: Hydra-Mechanical Press Brakes (sometimes called Hydro-Mechanical) offer the advantages of both mechanical press brakes and hydraulic press brakes. A hydra-mechanical press brake consists of a hydraulic cylinder (or cylinders) which supplies power to the ram. The ram is guided by a mechanical linkage system. The hydraulic aspect affords adjustable stroke, adjustable pressure, and adjustable speed. The mechanical linkage provides full tonnage for off center work as well as ram and bed parallelism. This combination of features can only be achieved with the hybrid design of a hydra-mechanical press brake.
  • CNC Hydraulic Press Brakes
Hydraulic press brakes can be outfitted with CNC gauging to increase productivity. CNC Press Brakes are offered as either conventional hydraulic press brakes or hydra-mechanical press brakes.

What is a CNC Press Brake?

Many press brakes are equipped with CNC controls (computerized numerical control). Not all brakes with a CNC control, however, should be described as CNC brakes. A press brake with a computer controlled single axis back gauge could be described as a CNC brake. More accurately, a true CNC brake has a minimum of a 2 axis control where the CNC controls both the X-axis (horizontal gauge) and Y-axis (ram). It is not uncommon for CNC Brakes to have more than 2 axes and many have a mulit-axis control.

What is a Mechanical Press Brake?

Unlike hydraulic press brakes that are driven with a hydraulic pump and hydraulic cylinders, mechanical press brakes are actuated by an eccentric crank shaft. Where hydraulic brakes have a fully adjustable stroke length, mechanical brakes have a stroke length that is constant and is not adjustable. Generally, mechanical brakes are much faster than hydraulic brakes in considering strokes per minute. Mechanical brakes are known for their ability to maintain accuracy under full load.

In addition to powered Press Brakes, Kempler also carries some manual brakes:
